The project proposes the development of a fully automatic artificial intelligence system based on MRI images for the recognition of suspicious areas for prostate cancer and their characterisation in terms of aggressiveness.
Such a system can offer numerous advantages in clinical practice, including:
- significantly reducing reporting times;
- better selecting patients for biopsy, reducing the number of unnecessary biopsies;
- providing a tool to guide biopsies, reducing the number of biopsy samples and increasing the sensitivity of biopsies;
- increasing the sensitivity and specificity of radiologists, especially less experienced ones, in identifying prostate carcinomas;
- providing a second opinion to the radiologist, especially in small centres where there is no strong expertise in the analysis of these images.
